Thermal Power Blowdown: Pretreatment Before Concentrators

Major wastewater streams

Cooling tower blowdown, boiler blowdown, ash handling water, and FGD purge lines dominate power-plant wastewater. Each stream differs in scaling tendency, metals, and suspended solids.

Clarification, softening, and targeted metals precipitation protect downstream RO and evaporators. Skipping robust pretreatment drives frequent acid cleans, unplanned derates, and higher chemical use.

Volume reduction through membrane recovery usually precedes heat-intensive concentration. Where steam export is constrained, non-thermal evaporation can handle a slice of the brine to preserve the plant heat balance.

Model intake TDS and cycles of concentration across seasons. Monsoon dilution and summer salinity swings both affect chemical dosing and achievable recovery.

Coordinate concentrate disposal with ash handling moisture limits and landfill contracts. The water story and solids story must be solved together.
