Three streams that should not be mixed blindly
Scale pit water, rolling mill coolant leaks, and tower blowdown each carry different oils, metals, and dissolved solids. Combining them without treatment often creates emulsions that are expensive to break later and can foul reverse osmosis or evaporation surfaces.
Front-end separation pays off
APIs, DAF, and media filtration are not glamorous, but they protect downstream membrane life and reduce chemical demand on concentrators. Steel sites that skip adequate oil removal usually pay for it in membrane replacements and unplanned shutdowns.
High-TDS blowdown and ZLD
When discharge limits tighten or water reuse targets increase, blowdown and reject lines become the salt sink. The question becomes whether thermal evaporation, non-thermal concentration, or a hybrid matches your steam availability and power price.
Next steps
Sample each major sump separately, measure oil and TDS, then design combined treatment only where chemistry is compatible.
