Monsoon operation changes both quantity and quality. Stormwater ingress can overload equalization tanks, dilute biological systems, and create false confidence in TDS readings.
The first control is segregation. Roof drains, yard runoff, process wash water, and high-TDS streams should not enter the same collection line unless the treatment plant was designed for that load.
Before heavy rainfall, operators should verify freeboard, transfer pump readiness, drain isolation, sump covers, and emergency storage availability. These checks are simple, but they prevent most avoidable overflow events.
Instrumentation needs closer review during monsoon weeks. Sudden drops in conductivity, pH swings, and abnormal flow spikes usually indicate dilution or unauthorized entry points.
A monsoon SOP should define who can divert streams, when tankers are called, how samples are labelled, and which alarms require plant management attention.
