High-COD Effluent Pretreatment Before Evaporation

Why this topic matters on the plant floor

High-COD effluent can overload evaporation systems when volatile organics, oils, suspended solids, and unstable pH are not controlled upstream. The issue is not only concentration; it is operating reliability.

Segregation is the first pretreatment step. Solvent-bearing, high-strength, acidic, alkaline, and washable streams should be mapped separately before deciding what can be biologically treated, recovered, or concentrated.

Equalization reduces shock. A well-mixed tank with level control and basic online readings gives the downstream plant a steady feed instead of batch-wise surprises.

Oil, solids, and color should be reduced before evaporation where possible. These loads can increase foaming, fouling, odor, cleaning frequency, and residue handling cost.

A good pretreatment plan defines acceptance criteria for the evaporator feed. Operators should know the limits for pH, suspended solids, oil and grease, COD range, and conductivity before transfer.
