Glass Plant Water: Silica, Solids, and Reuse Targets

Streams and fouling modes

Grinding and cutting generate fine silica-laden water. Cooling loops accumulate dissolved solids from makeup, while flue-gas contact water may carry acidity and particulates.

Clarifiers, lamella settlers, and tight filtration or UF barriers protect RO from premature plugging. Silica often caps recovery—design flux and antiscalant programs conservatively.

Clarified water can serve yard washing or secondary cooling. Boiler-quality reuse demands additional softening and polishing.

Softener regeneration and RO reject may be modest but persistent. Non-thermal evaporation can be economical when steam is not available for thermal concentrators.

Master fines removal and temperature control first; membranes and evaporators only work on clean, stable feeds.
