Evaporation

Brewery & Distillery Spent Wash: Concentration Before Disposal

Strength and seasonality

Spent wash and similar streams swing with batching, grain type, and wash practices. COD and TDS can be orders of magnitude above municipal sewage. That variability matters for reactor sizing, digester stability, and any downstream membrane step.

Volume reduction is the first lever

Where biogas recovery is in place, anaerobic stages cut organic load before aerobic polishing. Even then, a reject or sidestream often remains with elevated dissolved solids. Concentrating that fraction reduces tanker trips and landfill dependency.

Thermal versus non-thermal choices

Multi-effect evaporators are proven but capital- and energy-intensive. For some plants, engineered non-thermal evaporation offers a smaller footprint and lower operating energy when the end goal is manageable concentrate rather than absolute dryness on every line.

Next steps

Build a mass balance for worst-case production week, include CIP and floor wash contributions, then test small-scale concentration on real composite samples.
