Battery Recycling Leachate: Metals First, Brine Second

Hazardous fractions and segregation

Leachates from black mass processing can carry nickel, cobalt, lithium, manganese, and fluoride species. Keep hydrometallurgy bleed streams separate from general cooling or storm contacts.

Value recovery—precipitation, solvent extraction, or selective ion exchange—should precede bulk salt concentration. Sending metals-laden liquor straight to evaporators wastes chemistry and creates unmarketable solids.

Mixed monovalent brines challenge crystallization pathways. Piloting prevents locking in the wrong finish step or producing salt that landfills will reject.

ZLD proposals must include hazardous-waste classification, stabilization, and long-term liability for mixed salt cakes.

Treat these plants as metals facilities with a water balance, not generic industrial ETPs.
